For the 2nd time, a boat from the Yacht Club of Monaco, the Malizia-Seaexplorer, took part in the very famous Vendée Globe sailing race, a solo round-the-world sailing race, non-stop and without assistance.
This race pits the best skippers against each other for a 45.000 kilometers journey around the Globe passing by the three legendary Capes of Good Hope, Leeuwin and Cape Horn.
The Skipper of the Monaco boat, Boris Herrmann, finished the race in 12th place. He arrived on January 30, after 80 days at sea and 29,201 nautical miles covered at an average speed of 15.13 knots, despite very difficult weather conditions.
During the competition, the skipper of the Monegasque boat took part in a scientific mission, collecting essential data in difficult-to-access areas. It was responsible for taking water samples to measure parameters such as salinity, temperature, oxygen and CO2 levels, and for measuring, using scientific devices on board, atmospheric pressure, temperature and surface currents.
The environmental aspect has become a priority, both for the organizers and for the skippers. This commitment to the environment is part of the Vendée Globe endowment fund, of which H.S.H. Prince Albert II is this year's honorary president.
